David Richard Berkowitz (born June 1, 1953), also known as the “Son of Sam,” is an American serial killer who terrorized New York City between 1976 and 1977. Berkowitz murdered six people and wounded seven others in a series of shootings that created widespread panic. He targeted young couples, often attacking them while they sat in parked cars.
After an extensive investigation, Berkowitz was arrested in August 1977 and quickly confessed to the crimes, claiming at the time that he was commanded to kill by a demon inhabiting his neighbor’s dog. He was convicted of six counts of murder and sentenced to six consecutive life terms. While incarcerated, Berkowitz later renounced his earlier claims and became a born-again Christian. His case has been studied for its psychological aspects and its influence on media-driven public fear in the late 1970s.
