Per Yngve Ohlin (January 16, 1969 – April 8, 1991), known by his stage name Dead, was a Swedish vocalist best known for his influential but short-lived role in the Norwegian black metal band Mayhem. Dead joined the band in 1988 and became a defining figure in the early black metal scene, known for his extreme stage presence, bleak persona, and the morbid aesthetic that helped shape the genre’s visual identity.

He was recognized for his distinctive, anguished vocal style and for introducing theatrical elements such as corpse paint and self-inflicted wounds during performances—practices that would later become synonymous with black metal.

Dead struggled with severe depression, isolation, and chronic health issues. In 1991, he died by suicide at the age of 22, a tragedy that became one of the most infamous events in metal history. His death deeply impacted Mayhem and the wider scene, influencing both the mythology and the darker thematic direction of early black metal.
