Edward Theodore Gein (August 27, 1906 – July 26, 1984) was an American murderer and body snatcher whose crimes in Plainfield, Wisconsin, profoundly influenced popular culture and horror fiction. In 1957, police discovered that Gein had exhumed corpses from local cemeteries and fashioned household items and clothing from human remains. He was also found guilty of murdering two women, Bernice Worden and Mary Hogan.

Declared legally insane, Gein was confined to psychiatric institutions for the rest of his life. Though convicted of only two murders, the macabre nature of his crimes inspired several fictional characters, including Norman Bates in Psycho, Leatherface in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs. Gein’s case remains significant in forensic psychology and cultural studies for its examination of severe mental illness and necrophilic behavior.
