Keith Hunter Jesperson (born April 6, 1955), known as the “Happy Face Killer,” is a Canadian-American serial killer who murdered at least eight women across the United States between 1990 and 1995. A long-haul truck driver, Jesperson used his job to travel widely, often targeting women he met on the road. He earned his nickname by drawing smiley faces on letters he sent to media outlets and law enforcement, confessing to his crimes and expressing frustration that others had been wrongly convicted.
Jesperson was arrested in 1995 after confessing to the murder of his girlfriend. He later admitted to multiple additional killings, many of which took place along trucking routes. He was sentenced to multiple life terms without the possibility of parole. His case has been widely studied for its connection to transient offenders and the challenges of investigating crimes committed across multiple jurisdictions.
