Arthur John Shawcross (June 6, 1945 – November 10, 2008), known as the “Genesee River Killer,” was an American serial killer convicted of murdering 11 women in Rochester, New York, between 1988 and 1989. He had previously served time for the murder of two children in the early 1970s before being paroled.
Shawcross targeted sex workers, often strangling his victims and dumping their bodies near waterways. He was arrested in 1989 after being observed near a crime scene and later confessed to the killings. Sentenced to life imprisonment, Shawcross died in 2008. His case has been frequently referenced in forensic psychology for its connection between early trauma, violent recidivism, and the study of organized sexual homicide
