Arthur John Shawcross (1945–2008) was an American serial killer responsible for the murders of 11 women in the Rochester, New York, area between 1988 and 1989. Many of his victims were women involved in prostitution, and several bodies were discovered in or around the Genesee River and surrounding waterways.

Shawcross had previously been convicted of murdering two children in Watertown, New York, in 1972. After serving approximately 15 years, he was released on parole in 1987. Within a year, he began his Rochester area killing spree.

Shawcross was arrested in January 1990 and ultimately convicted of 11 murders. He received lengthy prison sentences and remained incarcerated at Sullivan Correctional Facility until his death in 2008.

His case remains particularly notorious because of the controversy surrounding his release from prison and subsequent crimes.
