Budd Dwyer Donation Slip

Donation card for politician Budd Dwyer’s grass roots campaign

Budd Dwyer was an American politician who served as the Treasurer of Pennsylvania from 1981 until his death in 1987. Born in 1939, he was a lifelong public servant, previously serving in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and State Senate.

Dwyer became nationally known for his tragic and shocking death: in 1986, he was convicted of bribery charges related to a state contract (charges he consistently claimed he did not commit). On January 22, 1987, during a press conference in Harrisburg, he committed suicide in front of reporters, an act that was widely broadcast and remains one of the most infamous moments in American political history.

His case remains controversial, with ongoing debate about his guilt, the fairness of his trial, and the extreme pressure he faced from both the legal system and the media.
