Dorothea Helen Puente (January 9, 1929 – March 27, 2011) was an American convicted serial killer who operated a boarding house in Sacramento, California. Between 1982 and 1988, Puente murdered elderly and disabled tenants, buried their bodies in her yard, and collected their Social Security and benefit checks.
She was arrested in 1988 after a police investigation uncovered human remains on her property. Puente was convicted of three murders, though she was suspected in up to nine deaths. Sentenced to life imprisonment without parole, she remained incarcerated until her death in 2011. Her case has been studied for its blend of financial exploitation and caregiving deception.
