Jack Kevorkian was an American pathologist and assisted-suicide advocate who became one of the most controversial figures in modern medical ethics. Nicknamed “Dr. Death,” Kevorkian claimed to have helped more than 130 terminally ill or suffering patients end their lives during the 1990s, arguing that individuals should have the right to choose a dignified death.

His actions sparked nationwide debate over physician assisted suicide and the limits of medical intervention. In 1999, Kevorkian was convicted of second-degree murder after administering a lethal injection to a patient, Thomas Youk, whose death was later broadcast on national television. He served eight years of a 10 to 25 year prison sentence before being released on parole in 2007. Kevorkian died in 2011, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence discussions surrounding end-of-life care and the right to die movement.
