Keith Hunter Jesperson, known as the “Happy Face Killer,” was an American serial killer who murdered multiple women across several states during the early 1990s. His nickname came from the distinctive smiley faces he drew on letters and messages in which he claimed responsibility for his crimes. Jesperson was a long-haul truck driver, allowing him to travel extensively and making it difficult for investigators to immediately connect his crimes. He ultimately confessed to eight murders, although authorities have investigated whether he may have been responsible for additional unsolved killings.

His crimes came to an end after his involvement in the murder of Julie Ann Winningham led investigators to focus on him. Jesperson was arrested in 1995 and later sentenced to multiple life terms without the possibility of parole. Today, Jesperson remains one of America’s more notorious serial killers, remembered both for the brutality of his crimes and for the disturbing “Happy Face” signature he used to taunt investigators and publicize his killings.
