Mark Twitchell “The Dexter Killer” Signed Letter

A rare and highly personal piece of true crime history, this six page handwritten letter from convicted Canadian serial killer Mark Twitchell offers a fascinating look into his thoughts, opinions, and correspondence from behind bars.

Written entirely in Twitchell’s own handwriting, the letter touches on subjects including empathy, his views on notoriety, correspondence with other notorious criminals, prison life, and his perspective on the media and true crime. The letter is signed “M” on page six, and included is also the mailing envelope which he printed his name and return address on.

Mark Twitchell is a Canadian filmmaker who became known as the “Dexter Killer” after his 2008 murder of John Brian “Johnny” Altinger in Edmonton, Alberta. Twitchell lured Altinger to a rented garage using a fake online dating profile, where prosecutors said he ambushed and killed him before dismembering his body and disposing of the remains. 

Twitchell had also previously lured another man, Gilles Tetreault, to the same garage under the guise of meeting a woman. Tetreault survived an attack and escaped. An attempted murder charge related to that incident was ultimately stayed and later dropped. 

A major piece of evidence against Twitchell was a deleted document from his laptop titled “SKConfessions,” which described the planning of a murder and the author’s progression toward becoming a serial killer. Twitchell maintained that Altinger’s death was an act of self defense, but a jury rejected his account and convicted him of first degree murder in 2011. He received a life sentence with no possibility of parole for 25 years.
