Michael Carneal is an American convicted murderer responsible for the 1997 shooting at Heath High School in West Paducah, Kentucky. At age 14, Carneal opened fire on a student prayer group gathered in the school lobby, killing three students and wounding five others before surrendering to authorities.
The shooting shocked the nation and became one of the earliest major school shootings to receive widespread media coverage in the years before Columbine. Investigators revealed Carneal had struggled with severe mental health issues and social isolation leading up to the attack. He later pleaded guilty but mentally ill to multiple counts of murder and assault and was sentenced to life in prison, becoming eligible for parole after serving decades behind bars.
