Robert William Pickton was a Canadian serial killer responsible for the murders of women from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. A pig farmer from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Pickton was arrested in 2002 following a police investigation into missing women and evidence discovered on his property.
Pickton was ultimately convicted of six counts of second-degree murder in 2007 and sentenced to life imprisonment with no possibility of parole for 25 years. Prosecutors alleged that he had murdered 49 women, making him one of Canada’s most prolific known serial killers. Although he was never tried for the remaining cases, investigators recovered extensive evidence from his farm, and the investigation into the missing women continued for years.
The Pickton case remains one of the most notorious criminal investigations in Canadian history, raising significant questions about the treatment of marginalized women, policing failures, and the prolonged disappearance of victims before authorities recognized the scale of the crimes.
