This original multi-page correspondence from David Berkowitz, infamously known as the “Son of Sam,” offers a compelling and historically significant example of his early prison-era communications. This is one of the earliest letters from Berkowitz on the market, written less than 2 years after being apprehended for his crimes.

Dated September 6, 1979, the typed letter is addressed to “Dee” and reflects Berkowitz’s conversational, sometimes sarcastic tone as he discusses books, writing, and personal observations. The body of the letter reveals his interest in literature and publishing, referencing titles such as The Michigan Murders and The Occult, while commenting on authors and readers with a mix of humor and critique. He even mentions Jack the Ripper! Portions of the final page transition into handwritten commentary, adding a personal layer that contrasts with the structured typewritten pages.

Accompanying the letter is the original mailing envelope, postmarked from Attica, New York, where Berkowitz was incarcerated at the time. The envelope bears institutional markings, a 15¢ stamp, and prison routing information, further reinforcing its authenticity and historical context. The handwritten return address identifies Berkowitz by name and inmate number, a detail that anchors the piece firmly within its period of incarceration.
