David Koresh (born Vernon Wayne Howell; August 17, 1959 – April 19, 1993) was an American religious leader and the head of the Branch Davidians, a sect that broke away from the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Koresh claimed messianic status and maintained a compound near Waco, Texas, where he exercised authoritarian control over his followers.
In 1993, a federal investigation into illegal weapons and allegations of abuse led to a 51-day standoff between the Branch Davidians and federal agents. The siege ended when a fire consumed the compound, killing Koresh and 75 of his followers, including children. The Waco incident remains one of the most controversial law enforcement operations in U.S. history, often analyzed in discussions of cult psychology, religious extremism, and governmental response to armed standoffs.
