Issei Sagawa was a Japanese man known for the 1981 murder and cannibalism of Dutch student Renée Hartevelt in Paris, a case that drew worldwide media attention. After being deemed legally insane in France, Sagawa was deported to Japan, where legal loopholes prevented further prosecution. He later became a controversial public figure, publishing books and giving interviews about the crime. Sagawa’s notoriety, media appearances, and the legal debate surrounding his release have kept his case a major topic in true crime discussions.
