Dennis Andrew Nilsen (1945–2018) was a British serial killer active in London between 1978 and 1983. Often compared to Jeffrey Dahmer, Nilsen murdered at least 12 young men and boys, many of whom he met in pubs or on the street and invited back to his flat. Seeking companionship rather than sexual assault, he killed his victims by strangulation or drowning, then kept their bodies for days or weeks. His crimes were discovered after human remains clogged the plumbing of his apartment building. Nilsen was convicted in 1983 and sentenced to life imprisonment, where he remained until his death.
