Gerald Stano (1951–1998) was an American serial killer who confessed to dozens of murders committed across Florida during the 1970s. While investigators believe many of his confessions were exaggerated or unreliable, he was convicted of multiple murders and is generally believed to have killed at least 22 women, making him one of Florida’s most prolific serial killers.
Stano primarily targeted young women and hitchhikers, often luring them into his vehicle before sexually assaulting and murdering them. He disposed of many victims in remote wooded areas, making identification difficult in several cases. Arrested in 1980, Stano was convicted of multiple murders and sentenced to death. He was executed by lethal injection at Florida State Prison on March 23, 1998.
Gerald Stano remains a significant figure in the history of American serial crime due to the scale of his crimes and the extensive investigations surrounding his confessions. His case is frequently studied alongside other notorious Florida serial killers of the era and serves as a reminder of the challenges law enforcement faced in linking victims across multiple jurisdictions before the advent of modern forensic technology.
